Job Summary

BASIC PURPOSE: Under the direct supervision of the RN, the surgical tech role for all surgical procedures is to facilitate the efficient and safe progress of the surgical procedure. The surgical tech anticipates and maintains all necessary sterile supplies and instruments during the procedure. Completes duties assigned by the registered nurse, in accordance with federal, state and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, guidelines of the department and Mercy Health Partners. Responsible for understanding patient rights .


  •  Provides complete case preparation and has knowledge of special instrument, supply, and equipment needs to the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
  • Maintains aseptic technique.
  • Handling of surgical specimens.
  • Provides appropriate care of instrumentation, supplies, and equipment during and following the case.
  • Supplies the surgeon with instruments, equipment and supplies in accordance with the surgeon’s routine and specific requests.
  • Counts needles, sponges, and instruments according to policy.
  • Displays and promotes teamwork, assist the surgical team as needed
  • Pursues professional development and personal development.
  • Promotes cost containment efforts.
  • Participate in all patient safety care measures

  1. Effectively documents patient data with attention to detail on proper forms.


  1. Communicates effectively with care team members regarding patient and unit/area needs.
  2. Provides input to RN to generate or revise the plan of care.
  3. Demonstrates flexibility regarding unit/area staffing and scheduling needs.


  1. Attends and participates in 70% of department meetings.
  2. Attends JCAHO required programs meetings and mandatory inservice programs; participates in staff development, including educational pursuits and managing self-development.
  3. Maintains personal grooming and attire consistent with policy.


  1. Participates in Performance Improvement Process and utilizes                 Performance Improvement results.
  2. Participates in financial accountability by utilizing resources in a cost conscious manner.


  1. Demonstrates knowledge of patient/client rights and responsibilities according to patient/client’s age and understanding.
  2. Demonstrates understanding of patient/client Advance Directives.



High School Graduate, GED, or equivalent required, 

Graduate of an accredited surgical technology training program, or equivalent experience,

CPR Proficiency.

Certification as Surgical Technologist Preferred.
