Job Summary

SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Apprentice Processing Tech works under the direct supervision of the Central Service Manager or the Central Processing Coordinator. This position is responsible for accurately receiving and processing reusable supplies and equipment. Decontaminates, prepares/assembles and packages patient care equipment, scopes, instrument trays, basin sets, prepares and packages linen packs; sterilizes and stores reusable linen packs, instrument trays, basin sets, etc.; prepares surgical case carts. Operates sterilizers and decontamination equipment. Performs required quality monitoring tasks. Operates the instrument tracking system throughout all processing and distribution phases.

Qualifications - Minimum

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must acquire CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) within one year of employment.

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma required.

EXPERIENCE:

Prefer a minimum of 1 year of working experience in a related field

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Broad Range of Administrative or Technical Skills.

Extensive knowledge of surgical instrumentation, processing/sterilization procedures, medical and surgical terminology for case cart set – up, use of a variety of cleaning and sterilization equipment and use of a personal computer.

Follows detailed written procedures (tray checklist and case pick list).

 PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Receives documents and processes all incoming reusable supplies and equipment per established procedures.

Adheres to the established dress code to minimize personal contact with contaminated instruments and equipment. Uses “Universal Precautions'.

Operates sterilizers, decontamination equipment including ultrasonic cleaners, and cart washer to decontaminate instruments, basins, containers, scopes and case carts in a safe and economical manner.

Decontaminates and sets-up patient care equipment. Places in designated holding area after set-up.

Utilizes proper decontamination techniques to ensure appropriate cleaning has been performed and to avoid damage to instruments or equipment.

Retrieves contaminated items from Surgery during peak activities the OR.

 Unloads washer in a manner that keeps instruments, sterilization containers and basins in a neat and orderly fashion for reprocessing.

Accurately checks, assembles, wraps or places into rigid sterilization containers, instrument trays from various departments such as Surgery, Labor and Delivery, Radiology, CVL, etc. Wraps basin sets, basins and other odd items.

Assists person assigned to sterilization in loading sterilizer carts

Maintains accurate sterilization records.

Accurately identifies each reprocessed item with the date of sterilization, name of tray or set, initials or person processing tray, number of sterilizer and load number.

Performs the cores quality checks on instrumentation.

Prepares instrumentation according to the manufacture written recommendations.

Maintains the integrity of the processing area.

Inspects linen for holes and discards or routes for patching if necessary. Delint’s prior to folding.

Develops and delivers daily linen order to the Laundry Department.

Sets up and wraps linen packs as per pack design.

Loads sterilization carts with linen packs and places in designated sterilizer. Maintains accurate sterilization records.

Cleans and monitors all sterilizers to insure proper operation.

Performs biological and chemical monitoring in accordance with quality assurance standards.

Loads sterilizer carts according CO set procedures to ensure proper sterilization. Unloads sterilizer carts in a systematic manner to insure proper shelf placement and/or dispensing to the designated department.

Accesses Surgery computer for daily surgery schedule and generated corresponding case cart pick list.

Completes case cans accurately and in a timely manner.

Responsible for returning sterile instrument trays to the OR and places in designated storage area.

Assures the correct sterilization time is utilized

Releases the sterilization load when all parameters have been met.

Performs the correct sterilization processor for implants

Prepares case carts.

Communicates with Surgery in a courteous and efficient manner regarding star case carts, requests for additional instrumentation and problems.

Provides appropriate and timely follow-up to questions regarding the status of a particular item.

Informs the manager of shortages in supplies used for processing instruments and equipment.

Must adhere to the hospital policy for maintaining confidentiality. Uses a PC to access surgery schedule and to generate surgical case cart pick list. Must maintain confidentiality of surgical patient information.

Handles and processes instrumentation/equipment in a manner that prevents personal injury or damage to product. Maintains a safe, neat and orderly work area.

Participates in educational programs and in-services as assigned.

Attends meetings as required. Assists in the orientation and training of newly hired personnel in relation to job function and duties.

Performs all related tasks and duties as assigned by the manager or designate Operates the instrument tracking system.

Hours

Hours per pay period: 80

Hours: 10:00am to 6:30pm and 12:00am to 8:30pm and 3:00pm to 11:30pm and 11:00pm to 7:00am

Must be available all shifts (start time may vary); Every other weekend; Every other holiday; Must be certified or acquire CARCST certification with one (1) year  employment.
