Job Summary

The Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital (St. E’s) President will be an integral, contributing member of the Mercy Health Youngstown executive team.  Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer of Mercy Health Youngtown, the President will provide the strategic and tactical leadership and direction on the operations for St. E’s. This individual is the key steward of the hospital’s operations, financial and physical assets and serves as a strategic partner within the region and Mercy Health leaders in setting the vision and direction for the hospital.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Directs the operations of St. E’s to ensure the highest quality, safety, service and effective use of resources to deliver state of the art health care.

  • Leads clinical quality and safety improvements by identifying opportunities for improvement and taking appropriate actions to successfully attain initiatives via coaching, mentoring and recognizing providers and support staff.

  • Provides leadership in the development of programs and systems that promote efficient and effective business operations. She/he will implement and oversee opportunities to reduce costs and align resources to create a sustainable, quality, profitable operation.

  • Provides input into health services, business development and overall strategic planning for the organization.

  • She/he will promote the efficient growth of the Hospital’s market share.

  • Directs efforts to recruit and retain staff that shares the values consistent with St. E’s and leads efforts specific to employee and physician engagement consistent with the mission. 
  • Will be the hands-on executive who can see the big picture and has a strategic perspective, while focusing on the financial and operational challenges and opportunities.

  • Energizes and inspires individuals and teams to perform at a high level; promotes collaboration and openly addresses conflict.

  • Works with Mercy Health Physicians, Regional Leaders and Hospital Presidents to align and collaborate with medical staff to meet the needs of the community.

  • Actively participates in the community and serves on community boards regularly.

Qualifications - Minimum

  • A Bachelor’s degree in management, business administration, finance, or marketing is required.  A Master’s degree (MS, MBA, MHA or MPH) in business or healthcare or an MD/DO with commensurate experience is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of five years progressive experience.

  • Experience as senior executive within a community and/or tertiary hospital, preferably with exposure to a teaching environment. 

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large complex health care organization positioned to meet changing marketplace demands in an environment of strong competition. 

  •   Candidates with background at a trauma center and service line leadership are strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully within a highly matrixed leadership model and system environment. Leads through influence and strong relationships built up on strong communication.

  •  Experience in a values driven organization which has demonstrated high levels of quality/clinical outcomes, customer service, productivity and efficient operations.
  • Experience building and retaining a strong, high performing team. Has built an accountable, results oriented and customer focused team through selecting and developing strong individuals and providing effective leadership and mentoring.
  • A successful track record of acting as a change agent within an organization.
  • A strong business acumen, quality and metrics orientation.  Is financially astute and highly experienced in using, developing and implementing benchmarks and other tools that improve operating, financial and service performance. Process redesign and Lean Six Sigma experience is a plus.
