Job Summary

MISSION:

SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

A Medical Laboratory Technician performs moderately complex testing and some highly complex testing as assigned and defined by CLIA CFR 42 on body fluids, cells and products; collects and processes biological specimens for analysis; reviews data generated by the various clinical laboratory testing while making determinations on whether a possible discrepancy/problem exists, confirms abnormal results after review with assigned staff, performs daily quality control, recognizes potential problems and triages effectively to assigned staff; maintains accuracy and precision; performs preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment as assigned; applies principles of educational clinical methodologies; recognizes and acts upon individual needs for continuing education. Displays professionalism in accordance with the HMHP philosophy and mission; demonstrates the HMHP values and competencies in the role as a member of the shared lab services health care team.

Qualifications - Minimum

 EDUCATION:

Associate Degree, Medical Laboratory Technician – Certification: MLT(ASCP)

EXPERIENCE:

A new graduate or a MLT with experience is given an orientation of approximately two (2-3) months to acquaint him/herself with methods, hospital, policies, procedures, etc.

 KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

     Knowledge and skill required to perform the job responsibilities for both technical and dimensional content. 

Broad Range of Administrative or Technical Skills

  • Has broad, fairly detailed level of  knowledge of a specific area.
  • Gathers, organizes, verifies, composes and/or analyzes data in the completion of several defined, multi-step procedures.
  • Produces final output within established standards.
  • May operate complicated equipment/machinery.

Must have a working knowledge of moderately complex lab testing, and/or learn a specialized area highly complex testing as assigned. Must analyze and interpret moderately complex information, and determine a course of action based on general guidelines. May modify existing forms, procedures or methods as needed. May use highly sophisticated equipment requiring extensive training. Must possess manual dexterity’s to centrifuge and separate specimens; pipette solutions, mix, shake, or layer reagents and specimens; read and be able to differentiate on the basis of color; read test results by use of colorimeters, spectrophotometers, electronic counts, etc. Compute data, record and report results through proper channels. Must be proficient on the laboratory and hospital computer system.

PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION  MAKING:

     The degree to which judgment and analysis must be exercised in planning, investigating issues, and evaluating alternative solutions to the challenges posed by the job.  Deals with the nature of the decisions, the variety of problems, and how decisions are made in context of the typical requirements of the job.

  • Has clear-cut alternatives available and usually follows a specified course of action.

Makes decisions based on policy, technical knowledge, general principles and facts, or on consultation if needed with pathologist, manager. Solutions generally based on past precedent with some risk taking involved in new approaches. Job requires judgment to adapt existing knowledge base to problem situations. Must be able to make sound decisions based on moderately abstract data. Is required to follow through on problems to ensure issue is referred to assigned staff and is clearly articulated. Exercises independent judgment for analyzing problems, reporting, QC.
