Job Summary

This position works within the scope of the Medical Assistant practice, and in alignment with standards of excellence and quality, provides patient care under the direction of the provider. Also performs accurate front desk workflows in the physician practice setting, while maintaining a high level of professional customer service. Floats and performs same functions to other Mercy Health Physicians’ offices, including extended shift hours and weekends, as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs medical assisting duties as needed routinely. Please see Medical Assistant job description for specific MA duties.

Performs front office operations as expected. Maintains current knowledge of all insurance cards and billing necessities to obtain accurate demographic, financial, and clinical information and signatures from patients (or Medical Power of Attorney) as determined by Medicare, State and Federal guidelines.

Collects copays as applicable and attempts to collect any outstanding debt to facility/practice.  Able to accurately balance the cash drawer and petty cash and complete end of day finance procedures, including the daily deposit.

Performs pre-registration as needed before the patient arrives. Ensures required patient forms are current. Fills out and advises patients on how to complete forms. Schedules all patients who need a physical exam/appointment.

Demonstrates standards of excellence in care in all interactions, for both internal and external customers. This includes conducting appointment reminder confirmation calls, and triaging phone messages to appropriate departments. Manages the front office patient flow by collaborating with other staff and providers.

Performs office administrative duties when needed and maintains office supplies for sufficient inventory and office equipment for proper functioning. Keeps work area clean, neat, organized, professional and presentable as this is a first impression for patients. Manages various work queues in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

Qualifications - Minimum

EDUCATION:

Required Minimum Education: Vocational/Technical Degree

Specialty/Major: Medical Assisting

Preferred Education: 2 year Associates

Specialty/Major: Medical Assisting

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:

Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).

EXPERIENCE:

Must have graduated from a Medical Assisting program or have at least 3 years of direct medical assisting experience in a physician practice or ambulatory setting within the last 5 years. Would accept current CMA or RMA licensure in lieu of education.

Basic keyboarding and computer skills, ability to use standard office equipment (phone, fax, copier, printer). Excellent customer service skills including ability to greet people in a warm and friendly manner.

Preferred knowledge in the use of medical terminology and insurance, preferred customer service background. Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience.

Hours per pay period: 80

Hours: Varies

Afternoons, evenings and weekends.

Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
