Job Summary

 BASIC PURPOSE:

Obtains blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture.  Processes specimens for diagnostic testing and referral testing.  Sorts specimen drop-offs according to insurance. Insures accurate registration of specimens as needed and sorts paperwork for medical records.  Performs various clerical tasks and answers phone calls.  Maintains a professional appearance and attitude.    

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Follows all hospital and laboratory policies; i.e. infection control, confidentiality, etc.
  • May obtain blood specimens by venipuncture with syringe, vacutainer, or capillary puncture.  Monitors the workflow to insure specimens are drawn in timely manner.  Available to assist with difficult patients. Is competent to perform phlebotomy on all age groups.  Sets up collecting tray. 
  • Responsible for appearance of working area.  Notifies site Lead Tech of inventory shortages, or orders supplies as necessary.
  • May obtain specimens in physician offices, drawsites, health screens, or other outreach locations.  Processing all necessary paperwork for specimens to be delivered to the laboratory.
  • Performs customer service duties, including but not limited to: answering and directing phone calls, relaying and faxing test results, order verification, typing, filing, trouble shooting specimen problems and missing results, patient charging, results delivery, reference result processing etc.  Fields customer complaints/ concerns and addresses as necessary or routes to the proper location.
  • Performs pre-analytical testing and prepares all specimens, blood, microbiology, etc., to and from other facilities, and to various testing departments.  Evaluates all tests requested for order accuracy, appropriate collection time, special collection requirements, etc.  Accessions, aliquots and transfers reference laboratory specimens.
  • Interprets physician orders and follows proper procedure for ordering testing in HBO.  Decides if specimens are suitable and appropriate for tests requested.  Audits peer orders for accuracy. Properly labels all specimens with barcode labels and delivers to laboratory departments.  Fills out managed care paperwork for specimens with insurance that is out of network for Mercy.

 Core Lab:

  • Registers specimen drop-offs, sorting specimens based on insurance and account.  Makes decisions about the proper registrations for billing situations for sociability accounts, composite and global billing.  Determines the proper referral laboratory for out of network insurance. Evaluates Medicare/ Medicaid registrations for medical necessity by use of compliance module, PCA.
  • Enters and obtains Medicare Secondary Payor information.  Assesses all registrations for missing information and audits a daily registration list to insure all paperwork is delivered to medical records.
  • May assist in other areas or duties as requested by the Supervisor.

EDUCATION, SPECIALIZED AND/OR TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:**

  • High school degree or equivalent required.
  • Proficient in typing and general computer skills.
  • Formalized phlebotomy training or equivalent highly desirable.
  • Medical terminology highly desirable.

Hours

Hours: 20 hours per week

Schedule: 5:00am - 1:30pm

Shift: Days

Rotating holiday and every third weekend.
