Job Summary

BASIC PURPOSE:   The computer tomography technologist is a certified health professional who, under the direction of an authorized user, is committed to applying the art and skill of diagnostic imaging through the safe and effective use of CT scanning equipment.  Responsibilities include direct patient care provided in a compassionate and timely manner.  The technologist's growth and development is maintained through ongoing medical and technical education and research and ultimately contributes to the delivery of quality patient care.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

PROFESSIONALISM

  • Is neat in appearance and in accordance with established dress code that promotes professionalism.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

  • Demonstrates knowledge of policies, procedures and emergency codes of the hospital and the radiology department.
  • Reviews all appropriate manuals annually.

JOB KNOWLEDGE

  • Demonstrates knowledge of direct patient care for imaging.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of computed tomography procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of operation of all equipment used in computed tomography.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of procedures that use contrast material.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of PACS.

QUALITY

  • Performs warm-up procedures on scanner daily.
  • Properly positions patient on CT scanning cradle and properly immobilizes with appropriate devices to obtain desired anatomic position.
  • Selects exposure techniques and correct computer protocol for exam.
  • Makes radiation exposures by energizing scanner per physician request and history.
  • Manipulates reconstructed images using a wide variety of available computer functions to optimally visualize desired anatomy.
  • Loads and programs pressure injector according to parameters established for each procedure.
  • Performs intravenous injections and knowledgeable of use and care of existing IV's.
  • Administers oral, rectal and IV radiographic contrast agents specific to procedure.
  • Assists the radiologist with biopsies, drainage procedures, etc.
  • Assures the quality of all images and that all pertinent patient/procedural data on the images is correct.
  • Records images by operating the PACS.
  • Initiates computer archive function to transfer computer data to PACS.
  • Trouble shoots equipment during malfunction and reports malfunction to the Bio-Med Department.
  • Performs daily QA to include temperature logs and dates on IV contrast.
  • Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain clinical competency as required for the department for assignment and to patients with growth and developmental needs, particularly related to patients who are children, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

QUANTITY

  • Performs an appropriate amount of procedures in a reasonable amount of time.  Uses time wisely for efficient department operation.

PATIENT CARE/EVALUATION OF EXAM

  • Demonstrates knowledge of direct patient care by evaluating the patient, verifying patient ID, orders and related information to assure the appropriate procedure is performed.
  • Explains procedure to patient.
  • Prepares patient for procedure.
  • Obtains and records patient history and consent form (if applicable).
  • Ensures patient comfort, privacy and safety during procedure.
  • Monitors condition of patient and medical equipment that may be disturbed due to nature of exam and report changes to patient care services.

RADIATION SAFETY

  • Demonstrates knowledge of state and department policies regarding radiation safety while operating radiographic generating equipment.
  • Provides proper radiation protection for patients, self and others (uses lead aprons, lead gloves, and gonadal shielding when appropriate).
  • Properly screens all females in childbearing age as to possible pregnancy.
  • Properly wears radiation dosimetry badges, exchanges badges each month and reviews/signs monthly dosimetry reports.

BODY SUBSTANCE ISOLATION

  • Follows all body substance isolation policies related to imaging procedures e.g., wear gloves, mask, shoe covers and transports specimens in infection control bags.

CLERICAL DUTIES

  • Demonstrates competent use of a variety of computer functions.
  • Enters data on computer.
  • Performs clerical duties as needed
  • Copies images.
  • Documents all charges.
  • Scans appropriate documents into PACS

CLEANLINESS/SUPPLIES

  • Ensures work area, equipment and supplies are maintained in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Assumes responsibility for inventory and radiographic accessories in assigned area and replaces missing supplies.
  • Reports low stock items to supervisor.
  • Reports all equipment malfunctions to supervisor/radiology maintenance.

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

  • Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement goals and monitors.
  • Participates in radiology performance improvement projects.
  • Assists in acquisition of performance improvement data.
  • Offers suggestions related to continuing improvement.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

  • Attends mandatory annual required hospital in-services.
  • Attends/participates in department in-services.
  • Actively participates in continuing education to maintain professional rating as required by accrediting agency.
  • Completes annual mandatory educational requirements

EDUCATION OF NEW STAFF/STUDENTS

  • Assists in the orientation of new staff or cross training staff in CT procedures.
  • Supervises and evaluates students as part of their clinical education.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Performs other duties that assist in the smooth performance of the department, e.g., cross trained, on call.
  • Responds to changes in department needs, e.g., scheduling.
  • Accepts additional responsibilities to improve department performance, e.g., committee member or departmental special projects.

EDUCATION, SPECIALIZED AND/OR TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Graduate of an accredited Schoolof Radiologic Technology.
  2. Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology.
  3. License by the Ohio Department of Health.
  4. Recommended not required to be registered in computed tomography by taking an advanced level exam given by ARRT.
  5. Current CPR certification
