Job Summary

Functions proficiently in the collection and processing of biologic specimens within predetermined guidelines; establishes a professional relationship with patients; communicates effectively with other health care personnel; interprets test requests; handles phone inquiries and gives information to callers, and schedules appointments for stimulation tests. Is proficient/accurate with patient information.  Functions as a technical support person in the urgent care. Rotates in all off-site locations as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs specimen collection according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). 

Processes and distributes specimen to proper location.

Follows established test protocols according to SOP. 

Able to identify available resource material independently. 

Provides collection instruction and information to patients.

Listens and responds to patient needs.  Respects patients' confidentiality and privacy.  Treats patients and families with compassion.  Adapts communication to meet patient needs.  Manages difficult or emotional patient situations.

Performs collections on all age groups and degrees of difficulty.  Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development.  Is able to conduct age-appropriate assessment and provide age-appropriate care.  Uses appropriate communication techniques and recognizes age-specific responses to treatment.

Is able to assess emergency situations and respond calmly and quickly following the standard operating procedures.  Displays teamwork during emergencies.

Checks orders for accuracy. 

Dates and initials lab documents. 

Identifies/corrects duplicate and erroneous orders. 

Able to give and receive accurate information. 

Handles telephone inquiries. 

Gives information to callers or able to route call to the appropriate source. 

Demonstrates verbal and written instructions or asks for clarification. 

Prioritizes and dispatches samples order and containers.

Follows established test protocols according to SOP. 

Produces accurate results. 

Follows up and documents discrepancies of unexpected results. 

Understands equipment operation. 

Maintains equipment in working order.

Performs computer entry of requests. 

Has good working knowledge of the powerchart system.

Documents, verifies and releases results according to procedure and priority. 

Runs pending list for incomplete work. 

Dates and initials lab documents.

Follows attendance and punctuality guidelines. 

Attends required meetings and in-service programs. 

Maintains current certifications and completes mandatory annual education.

Participates in performance improvement efforts. 

Strives to increase personal productivity.

Develops efficient work methods.

Qualifications - Minimum

Education:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) One year experience as a phlebotomist performing infant, child, and adult phlebotomy is preferred.  Medical terminology course.

Certified or eligible for phlebotomy certification
