Job Summary

The Mercy Health Regional COO will be an integral, contributing member of the Mercy Health Youngstown executive team.  Reporting to the Regional CEO/President of Mercy Health Youngtown, the COO will provide the strategic and tactical leadership and direction on the regional operations for Youngstown region. This individual is the key steward of the region’s operations, financial and physical assets and serves as a strategic partner within the region and Mercy Health leaders in setting the vision and direction of the region.

 The following areas directly report to the Chief Operating Officer:

 Hospital Presidents of St. Elizabeth Youngstown, St. Elizabeth Boardman and St. Joseph Warren Hospital.

  • Regional Chief Nursing Officer
  • Regional Support Services Leader (includes, but not limited to Dietary, Environmental Services, Maintenance Services, Protective Services, Construction, etc)
  • Regional Service line leaders for Orthopedics, OB/Women’s Services, Oncology, Heart and Vascular, Radiology, Laboratory. Pharmacy and Surgical Services

Qualifications - Minimum

Experience and Skills

  •  A minimum of five years progressive experience. 
  •  Experience as senior executive within a community and/or tertiary hospital, preferably with exposure to a teaching environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large complex health care organization positioned to meet changing marketplace demands in an environment of strong competition.  Individuals should have a strategic mindset partnered with broad operating ability.  Candidates with background at a trauma center and service line leadership are strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully within a highly matrixed leadership model and system environment. Leads through influence and strong relationships built up on strong communication.
  •  Experience in a values driven organization which has demonstrated high levels of quality/clinical outcomes, customer service, productivity and efficient operations.
  •  Experience building and retaining a strong, high performing team. Has built an accountable, results oriented and customer focused team through selecting and developing strong individuals and providing effective leadership and mentoring.
  •  A successful track record of acting as a change agent within an organization.
  • A strong business acumen, quality and metrics orientation.  Is financially astute and highly experienced in using, developing and implementing benchmarks and other tools that improve operating, financial and service performance. Process redesign and Lean Six Sigma experience is a plus.
  •  Exceptional physician relations skills and prior experience working collaboratively with independent and employed medical groups.
  •  A performance driven approach, uses metrics to measure performance, embraces best practices and has a coaching management style while holding people accountable. 
  •  A commitment to quality in his/her organization and understands that quality is linked to superior economic performance. 
  •  A strong detail orientation and hands on approach combined with a strategic mindset.  His/her leadership style is authentic and they lead by walking around.
  •  Demonstrated understanding of healthcare technology and has a track record of integrating and leveraging these systems into a successful strategic and operational plan.
  •  Demonstrated success in building and maintaining a strong operating and compliant organization.
  •  Strong professional network externally.  She/he is politically savvy, highly visible, engaged and builds strong relationships with state and local leaders.
